What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a super focused state of concentration with complete relaxation of the body. It involves focusing attention and awareness inward, eliminating outside stimuli, transferring awareness and control from the conscious to the subconscious. Like meditation - the more you use hypnosis the more effective it becomes for you.

When a hypnotherapist - a hypnotist - facilitates you in reaching that focused state of concentration and relaxation you are most capable of reaching your own inner resources to resolve many challenges.

When you are hypnotized you may hear every word said during your hypnosis session or you may drift away into other thoughts - whichever is right for you. It is our job to facilitate you in reaching that focused state and present material to your subconscious mind that will allow you to achieve the goals you desire.

The hypnotic state is similar to other forms of deep relaxation or meditation. Physical indicators of being in a hypnotic state are reduced nervous system activity, decreased blood pressure, slowed heart rate, and increased brain wave activity. In a state of hypnosis, a person is highly responsive to suggestion and they can more easily access the resources of their subconscious mind.

During hypnosis you cannot be made to do anything against your will because you will not act in a manner that is at odds with your core value system and beliefs on what is and what is not acceptable behavior.

Do any of the following statements apply to you?

I wish I could quit smoking but I don't want to gain weight or be crabby.

I have headaches all the time.

I have tried every diet, lost some weight, but it comes back no matter what I do.

I have chronic pain that won't quit - even though my doctor has been great.

I am pregnant and am afraid my labor will be the same nightmare my mom had.

I have to plan my life around my migraines.

I have a fear of water that makes it hard to enjoy our boat.

I have cancer and I want to be an active part of my recovery.

I get apprehensive when I have to speak in front of crowds or do presentations.

I get so close to my goals, then something happens and I end up in the same old place.

I don't understand why my relationships always go nowhere.

If any of these statements sound familiar, you are not living as powerfully as you can.

Imagine what your life would be like IF....

...you were a non smoker

...you were able to manage your pain or be entirely free from it

...you could release the extra weight to have a health and fitness level that support you

...you could be in control of your life, your fear, your job and the health of your body....

WHAT IF you could make these things happen NOW?

IT IS POSSIBLE.

Hypnosis is not...
Hypnosis – as used in hypnotherapy – is not what we most frequently see on TV and in nightclub shows. The people on stage may or may not be hypnotized and even if they are in a hypnotic state they may actually be part of the entertainment being offered.

People who are hypnotized on stage are quite willing to quack like a duck, bark and roll over and any number of other states either because they are part of the show or they like the attention that they receive through the process. In either case - barking and quacking are things they would normally do in front of a crowd.

Core Values Prevail
In a waking state - when your conscious mind is running the show - you might be persuaded to do something you wouldn’t ordinarily do – like participating in a beer chugging contest, dancing on a table, or shoplifting. Persuaded by your friends or those around you to do something you would ordinarily say no to. This phenomena is similar to mob mentality – where peace loving gentle people behave in ways that they – as individuals – would never even consider.

In a hypnotic trance your unconscious is in total control and it will not be persuaded – by anyone - to do anything that goes against your core values. While in a hypnotic state you cannot be induced, forced, or coerced into doing something while in “trance” or be given a post hypnotic suggestion that you then do after you "wake up" – that is in conflict with your core values – your unconscious would simply disregard such a request .

You cannot be made to do anything against your will because all hypnosis is self hypnosis and you will not act in a manner that is at odds with your core value system and beliefs on what is and what is not acceptable behavior.

What It Is
Picture if you will a scale line with the fully conscious state at one end and deep dreamless sleep at the other end. So, you start your day pushing the indicator arrow on this scale from the deep dreamless sleep end of the scale towards the fully conscious supercharged alertness end of the scale. As you wake up, if you are like me, the pointer moves slowly towards more awareness of your surroundings as thoughts of your day start filtering in. If you are similar to my husband your pointer jumps from the deep dreamless sleep point to midway across that scale in a matter of seconds. He is up, perky, half dressed and ready to go before I’ve even rubbed my eyes. Mornings are interesting at our house.

Hypnosis is on the same scale someplace between those two points.

There are times where you are lost in thought, examining feelings about an interaction you’ve just had, where you might be flipping through the photo albums of memories of your past or projected images of one possible future. You are not fully alert and aware of your surroundings at these moments. Just like when you are driving and lose sense of time and even where you are. You are in an altered state of consciousness during these moments.

Have you ever

If you have experienced any of these you have been in self-hypnosis - unguided, unassisted, not directed towards any specific outcome – but you were hypnotized .

Another way of picturing hypnosis might be looking at electric. You can’t see it, most of us do not have a clear picture on how it is produced let alone how it gets pictures to our TV’s, voices through our phone lines, and heat into our hot water tanks – but we do not doubt it’s existence.

Hypnosis - and the techniques to assist you into a hypnotic state - are simply shifting the energy in your brain from one end of the consciousness scale towards the other end to enlist your unconscious mind – which processes 4.2 million bits of data in a given moment – in achieving the goals, desires, dreams and outcomes you want in your life.

Hypnosis is a tool that allows you to alter your perceptions, which alter your reactions and behaviors in relation to those perceptions - perceptions of current events, past events, or anticipated events.

Change your perception of a memory or the fear around a future event and you change your behavior in relation to that memory or event.

Can You Be Hypnotized?
Almost everyone can be hypnotized – if they want to be.

The quality of the experience may be different with different hypnotherapists, but that is logical. When you first meet someone there are times you immediately like them and feel like you’ve known one another for years and fall into simple rhythms. Other people annoy you with their first word and you can’t wait to get away from them. These are mind body connections that mesh or conflict at an energy level. When you are working with a hypnotherapist – or anyone else for that matter – it is the same way.

You’ve tried it before and it didn’t work?
Maybe you weren't ready. My mom and sister both went to the same hypnotherapist to enlist their unconscious in their desire to quit smoking. My sister had no option - she was getting a pace maker and the doctor told her it was a choice between smoking and death. It "worked" for her. My mom didn't really want to quit - so - naturally, it didn't "work" for her.

Maybe your desire wasn't strong enough, maybe the hypnotherapist you were working with wasn't a good fit, maybe something else was going on that neither of you noticed... try it again!

...what does NLP mean anyway?
NLP is Neuro Linguistic Programming.

It is the art based in science of how to effectively employ attitudes, skills and techniques for thinking and taking action in our every day real world to obtain extraordinary results in our homes, businesses and communities.

Each of us is unique, with our own personalities, our own "trade mark" styles.

We each bring different gifts and challenges to vaulting the bar of reaching personal excellence - which we define for ourselves. This is the "art" side of NLP - we are the art.

The science side has been researched, developed, tested, refined, observed, and tested again. Science has written "programs" that support using patterns, skills and techniques for more effective communication, accelerated learning, bringing out the best in others, and ourselves and bridges the gap between where we are and where we want to be.

These programs (skills and techniques) allow the art (you) to be more expressive, more expansive, and more extraordinary.

More you.

Neuro: the part of NLP that proposes that all behavior comes from our experience of the world as processed neurologically through our senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch and feeling. Our thoughts are married to our physical body reactions, reactions to ideas and events - body and mind as a unit - as you.

For instance - you smell dill pickles and your mouth puckers in anticipation, you hear Santana and your feet start tapping, you don't know why but you dread the 4th of July and get sick to your stomach when the fireworks start. All of these bodily reactions - the pucker tap and distress - begin in your brain because of stored memories of dill pickles, Santana and the 30 year old suppressed memory of the kid next door holding a cherry bomb too long on a long ago fourth of July.

Linguistic: How we use language to make our thoughts tangible - to give them substance, how the words we select define our behavior - define who we are, and how we use the language to communicate with others.

For instance - describe what the color red is to you as though you were explaining it to someone that was born without sight. The words you use will enable them to "see" what the color red "looks" like to you.

Programming: How we control - or not - the thought processes which trigger the physical reactions. How we choose - or not - the words we mold our thoughts to, words that define our behavior and who we are, words that communicate our intentions - to those in our homes, offices, neighborhoods, to the collective unconscious - to God. The programming of our thoughts that direct our behavior that become habits and how our control, our choices - or lack thereof - produce the outcomes that we call our lives.

For instance - Do you think an artist, a ships Captain, and a marine biologist see a Pacific Coast beach the same way?

No, of course not. They have had different experiences of the beach and the ocean that program them to see through different eyes. They will each smell different memories in the salt air, the sand between their toes will speak unique stories to each of them, the water will reflect to each of them what they take to it's edge - none will see the same shade of blue.

Science shows that the brain cannot tell the difference between an actual memory and one that you give it - visualization. What this means in practical terms is that for any memory - or state - that does not support excellence or the outcome you desire, you can change it with NLP.

Do you have a filter in your brain of your parent's voice? A filter that might be telling you that you will always be a bum? A filter that tells you that you will never finish anything? That you're lazy, fat, stupid, mean, ugly, or any of a thousand other drops of acid against the soul of your childhood?

You can change that filter with NLP - now.

Do you have a filter that tells you that you will never pass Algebra? That you'll never find a man/woman you can trust? That you'll always be struggling to get by?

You can change that filter with NLP - now.

Do you have suppressed memories that create a barrier between you and your ability to touch life? Memories remembered that rob life of its color? Anguished feelings as a result of traumas - emotional or physical, abandonment, violence? PTSD?

You can access better states - produce more productive outcomes - now, using NLP processes.

FACT: The conscious mind can track 5 to 9 variables - bits of information - at any given moment.

These bits of information include all internal and external bits at any moment. So if you are average and can track 7 bits at this moment and you are thinking of eating a carrot you only have 6 bits l to work with.

Seven. Isn't that ridiculous?

How can we, in an infinitely complex universe - running computers with their giga hertz and giga bites and duel processors, drinking hot coffee and driving while talking on the cell phone, and folding clothes baking brownies watching the 4 kids in the sand box and nursing the baby simultaneously - only track 7 bits at a moment?

Habit.

The unconscious mind can track 4.2 MILLION bits of information at any moment.

That is how we barely sentient beings have survived for tens of thousands of years.

Habit.

Our unconscious minds take care of the requirements for our continued existence on this planet. It works in concert with our bodies, allows us to drive drink coffee and talk on the cell phone; to develop the skills and abilities of world class athletes blended with Winston Churchill in order to be a good mom to 4 kids in the sandbox and one at the breast while baking brownies and doing laundry.

Your unconscious has listened to everything that was ever said in your presence - even before you were born. It hears everything you say - even when you are putting yourself down, beating yourself up, and just generally being mean about yourself.

It's in there. Listening. Recording. Programming your behavior
to make sure
you get what you expect.

Since your unconscious mind can track 4.2 MILLION bits of information at any moment, and can create the habitual pattern that allows you to drive and drink coffee, isn't it totally logical and reasonable to believe that by accessing the unconscious you can create new patterns, new habits, new programs?

Of course it's logical. And you can.

NLP is fast and amazingly easy. You access the power of your unconscious mind using NLP.

NLP gives you the opportunity to create the life you want – your past, present and future - to create your best outcome.

You don't have to be a brain surgeon or a computer programmer to use NLP - although NLP works for them too. Average everyday Joe's - like my Joe - can work with NLP processes.

NLP will work for you now.
